Appearance: Beyond Birthday put a lot of effort into making his appearance a close mimicry of L’s. Though not a perfect copy, B does bear a close resemblance to L. He is fairly tall, but stands with a pronounced slouch that makes him appear far shorter. He has dark hair and dark eyes with dark lines under them. He wears very plain clothing, usually a plain shirt and faded jeans. All things considered, the doppelganger looks quite similar to the original, and it may be hard to tell the difference between the two.
Personality: To Beyond Birthday, nothing matters more than surpassing L. He believes that so long as the real L exists, B will always stand for “Backup”. The combined pressure to become L, the expectations that he would fail to do so, and any preexisting disorders he may have had already pushed him off the edge. He spends all his time in a mimicry of L—appearing as he does, acting as he does, and is even capable of thinking as he does.
Behind the façade, however, Beyond Birthday and L are hardly alike. Beyond is driven by a blind, crazed ambition that frequently borders on obsession. He is slightly less careful, he is cruel, and he is far from sane. B is brilliant and deviant, and perhaps a bit obsessive compulsive (for example, at every murder scene, he wiped everything down, including the light sockets). He doesn't seem to give a damn about justice and stopping crime and all those things detectives are generally expected to care about; they just don't register very high on his list of concerns. He is a very disturbed individual who could not accept his given role as a copy, and attempted to break away from that label in all the worst ways possible.
Abilities: B’s only apparent supernatural ability is that of the shinigami eyes he was born with, which allows him to see the true name and remaining lifespan of anyone he sees. There are a large bunch of rules associated with being able to use these eyes to see names; in short, he needs to be able to see at least half of a person’s face (i.e., the top half of the head or the side half of the face, including the eyes/an eye), the person’s full profile, or their full face (in which case it’s alright if the person is wearing sunglasses and the like) in order to see their name. So long as those requirements are met, it doesn’t matter if he’s looking at them in person or at a picture or video of them, although it won’t work with a drawing, no matter how detailed. In addition, Beyond can see his own name, but not his own lifespan when looking at his reflection in a mirror, and he cannot see the life span of anyone who owns a Death Note. (As a side note, it is also impossible to physically tell if someone has the shinigami eyes by any means.) As for other abilities, he’s intelligent—almost to a fault--and he claims to be “pretty strong”, whatever THAT means.
Weaknesses: B’s greatest weakness is his tendency to underestimate those around him and overestimate himself. He thinks that most if not all “ordinary” people are not smart enough to figure him out, and that he is smart enough to keep them chasing their tails. This leads him to accidentally make seemingly petty, careless blunders that can (and often do) wind up being fatal mistakes. B, despite the great care he takes in his murder scenes, is also surprisingly careless when he talks; he sometimes slips up in conversation and says something he shouldn't know about, which can also have disastrous results for him.
Manhattanite or outsider? Outsider
History: Beyond Birthday, for whatever reason and by whatever means, was born with the shinigami eyes, which allowed him to see the true names and remaining life spans of everyone around him. For him, seeing those life spans was seeing death; he lived life unceasingly reminded that all humans would eventually die. Naturally, it had a profound effect on his personality.
After his parents’ deaths, Beyond became part of the first generation of Wammy’s House, an orphanage designed to house gifted children in the hopes of shaping them into L’s successors. Or rather, that’s what it later became. B’s generation was one of backups, fail-safes should L die. He was expected to fail, yet pressured to succeed, and B did not take this easily. He didn’t want to be L. He wanted to surpass L, be better than him in every way.
From B’s perspective, so long as the real L existed, “B” would always stand for “Backup”. And what better way to prove one’s superiority to L than by beating him at his own game, so to speak? And as L’s game is that of being a detective, the best way to go about doing this would be to create a case that even the great detective L couldn’t solve. It was this ideology that led Beyond to commit a series of complex, nearly unrelated and seemingly unsolvable murders. In addition, before the fourth murder was to occur, he met frequently with Naomi Misora, who was investigating under L in the cases, under the pseudonym “Rue Ryuuzaki”. He “guided” her skillfully with unobtrusive hints to the clues he left behind at each scene while also distracting her from the metaphor of the decreasing Wara Ningyo voodoo dolls at each scene (starting at four and decreasing to one as each murder took place) he had used in a pulley system to lock the doors at the crime scene. He made sure that she deciphered each clue and moved on to the next, all the while playing the fool.
And then came the fourth “murder”, in which B planned to commit suicide by burning himself to death. Of course, with that, anything that may have connected him to B from Wammy’s House would also go up in smoke; he had left no picture behind, after all. The killer would die, but due to the decreasing Wara Ningyo at each scene, a lack of a fifth murder would not lead to such a conclusion. B theorized that L would have no choice but to continue chasing after him, yet the murders would remain unsolved because the killer no longer existed. Therefore, even in death, B would be the winner.
...Or so he thought. Ultimately, Beyond Birthday was so preoccupied with L that he vastly underestimated Naomi Misora’s own abilities, which came to be a critical mistake; she arrived at the truth at almost exactly the same moment he poured gasoline on himself.
The last thing B remembered is lighting the match with which he would burn himself to death. Immediately afterward, he “woke up” in Manhattan, as though he’d dreamt it all along...
